Dr Animesh Singh MBBS BSc (Hons) MRCP (Rheum) FRCP

GMC 6130215
Consultant Rheumatologist and General (Internal) Medicine Physician

I am a Consultant Rheumatologist and General (Internal) Medicine Physician based at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, a major tertiary referral centre in London. I aim to provide holistic, evidence-based care to all my patients — whether they are seeking a diagnosis, a second opinion, or ongoing management for a known condition.

I am proficient in the diagnosis and treatment of the full spectrum of rheumatological disease, with particular interest in:

  • Psoriatic arthritis

  • Rheumatoid arthritis

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Osteoporosis and fracture risk

  • Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) and Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA)

  • Gout and crystal arthritis

  • Vasculitis

  • Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) and Haemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH)

  • Lupus (SLE)

  • Sarcoidosis

  • Joint and soft-tissue steroid injections

  • Other complex autoimmune and other inflammatory conditions

Dual Expertise: Rheumatology and Internal Medicine

Alongside my rheumatology practice, I am actively involved in acute and general medicine, including the care of acutely unwell patients and the investigation of complex, undifferentiated symptoms that may cross multiple specialties. My dual accreditation enables me to take a comprehensive and systematic approach, especially in diagnostically challenging cases.

Specialist Clinics and Research

At the Royal Free, I co-lead a joint clinic for patients with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, working in partnership with a consultant dermatologist to deliver coordinated, multidisciplinary care.

I am an investigator on a number of clinical trials, including studies in:

  • Psoriatic arthritis

  • Giant Cell Arteritis

  • Adult-onset Still’s disease (AOSD) and Haemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH)

I also work with local and national commissioning groups on the appropriate and effective use of biologic therapies in autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases.

Teaching, Leadership and Professional Development

I am the lead for postgraduate medical education in acute medicine at the Royal Free Hospital and serve as an educational supervisor for junior doctors and a clinical tutor for undergraduate medical students. I have also previously held the role of governance lead in acute medicine, supporting quality and safety in frontline care.

I remain committed to reflective practice and ongoing learning — attending and presenting at weekly postgraduate teaching and national & international conferences, maintaining full appraisal and revalidation, and regularly seeking feedback from patients to improve the care I provide.

Training, Research and Clinical Background

I completed my undergraduate medical training at University College London (UCL), where I also undertook an intercalated BSc in Immunology, graduating with First Class Honours.

During this time, I completed a prize-winning Arthritis Research Campaign funded research project investigating regulatory T cells in rheumatoid arthritis, supervised by Professor Mike Ehrenstein and Professor Claudia Mauri at the Windeyer Institute, UCL.

My postgraduate training in general medicine and rheumatology was undertaken across North and West London including some of the busiest district general hospitals and internationally renowned teaching centres, providing a broad and intensive exposure to the full spectrum of rheumatological and general medicine pathology.

I stepped away from the NHS to undertake a sabbatical working for a global pharmaceutical company, where I designed and ran global clinical trials, developing new treatments for patients with inflammatory diseases. I was pivotal in the design, launch and completion of the FocuSSed study (a phase 3 clinical trial in systemic sclerosis), resulting in FDA and subsequently global approval for tocilizumab in systemic-sclerosis lung disease.
